Now that schools are closed due to the Corona virus outbreak, parents might be worried about a number of things which includes; how to keep their children safe, occupied and learning at home. My advice to parents is that they should stay calm and not panic. Remember, we are all in these together and you are not alone!
As parents, you are most likely working from home with the added responsibility of dealing with restless and energetic children and teenagers who are at home from school and will need to be kept occupied with online learning. This is necessary now because the directive from the World Health Organization and the Federal and state government is for social distancing. This is not the time for traveling, partying or attending events !
There is a wealth of resources available online to help and guide you through this time including sample daily learning schedules for your child, various learning platforms and websites, lists of online learning apps, parents support groups and much more. Also the Lagos State Government in conjunction with the ministry of Education have designed a series of educational programs on radio and television for students, especially the SS 3 students, throughout this lock down.
In this post, I will be sharing some useful tips to support your child’s learning at home and also how our learning platform – MyMathsHero can keep your teens, especially those in the Senior Secondary School engaged at home.
3 tips to support your child’s learning at home.
You and your teen will have to create and agree on a daily schedule such as what time should they have completed house chores? What time should their learning start? What time should they be resting or taking a break? etc
Explore useful and age-appropriate learning resources for your child. These learning resources can be online, offline, or even, on radio and television. Several educational media programs are presently going on on radio and on television.
Check in on them frequently to be sure that they are actually learning. Monitor their progress and discuss wins and concerns together.
